Wayne O Evans Background
I was born in
southern Colorado (San Luis Valley) and lived there during my first
21 years. I attended high school
in Monte Vista and
college 16 miles from home at Adams State
College in Alamosa, Colorado. I started to college
with intentions to be a high school
math teacher but found the science classes more interesting
than the courses required for a
teachers certificate. By taking a heavy course load in tree
years, I graduated from Adams State College with a triple extended major
in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics.
I found a teaching assisistanship at Kansas State
University in Manhattan Kansas. I spent two years teaching introductory math classes
and getting a masters in mathematics.
The most
significant event while in Kansas is that I met my wife,
Ellen. We were married in 1963.
While the education at Kansas State was valuable the addition
of Ellen to my life was much more important. We have three
grown children and 4 grandchildren.
After graduation from Kansas State University, I
joined IBM in 1964. Many IBMers moved to different
locations but I spent my entire IBM career at the IBM
Rochester, Minnesota development laboratory.
The first 10 years I worked
as a programmer on IBM internal applications.
In 1975, I joined Advanced Systems,
the organization responsible for design and implementation of
the IBM mid range products including S/38 and AS/400
(iSeries).
I spent the next 17 years in Advanced systems This
would be the focus of my professional career even after
leaving IBM.
-
I was the
lead designer and team leader for the CL command
processor and command definition. The CL
command analyzer was designed and implemented in
1976. The only change was made in 1981 to
handle a syntax change (object.library to a
library/object). It is a credit to the team that
the code implemented in 1976 is in use by iSeries
systems today.
-
After completing the command analyzer, I formed
the team that did the first production testing of the applications
on hardware. Many hours were spent getting testing
applications (was the failure in the operating system,
micro code, or hardware). Our team created the first working
demonstration of function that was used for the first
day announce. I feel that this was one of the most significant projects
as it required coop oration of engineers,
micro coders, operating system programmers,
marketing and lots of hard work to put together. The S/38
was announced in 1978 in Germany and Rochester Mn. I was
with the team in Germany for the announce.
-
I lead the
team that build the double byte support (Ideographic
languages of China and Japan) and was present at the
announcement of the double byte support in Japan in
1080. I received a patent for the
multi-language features of S/38 and OS/400.
IBM owns several other invention disclosure
publications and patents on S/38 and OS/400 in my name.
-
I worked on
the team that incorporated the the features of
S/38 and S/36 to form OS/400
including: command definition, CL command
prompter, work management, message handling, double byte
character support (oriental languages), data queues,
and security. The integration of S/36 and S/38
security models to form OS/400 security was a major task.
I will use the term OS/400 to refer to the
operating system as that is the most familiar term for most
users rather than the current official name IBM i.
The IBM® i operation system (formerly IBM i5/OS®) is
considered one of the most secure systems in the
industry. The name of the operating system has changed
several times during since the 1978 when S/38 was
introduced. . The names of the operating system are:

I worked
27 years at IBM. When
IBM reduced the workforce
during an economic down turnnd, I took early retirement
in 1991 . The years at IBM were exciting
and filled with great
accomplishments. The friends and colleagues were outstanding and I miss
them. However the opportunity to leave
and spend full time teaching and helping IBM customers was
very exciting. I do not regret the decision
to leave IBM, as I still
see IBM friends at conferences. IBM like other companies has
changed and become less family and employee
friendly.
|
After leaving IBM, I used my OS/400
experience as an independent security consultant.
Now free from the IBM meetings, full time could be
placed on creating educational material, teaching
customers and writing articles.
You are
able to download many of the article I have written from the
other pages on this web site. The training of IBM
customers is the major focus of Wayne
O Evans Consulting. An equally important
focus is helping customer implement security
plans.
The detailed knownledge of potential security
exposures allows me to bring both experience and knowledge to
the training and audit. I have taught OS/400
security to the staff at major corporate audit companies
(Coopers Lybrand, Arthur Anderson). They
learned how to conduct an OS/400 audit. Most
auditors are familiar with the PC but they need to
learn the techniques and tools to review of OS/400
systems.
I wrote several articles and a monthly
column in Mid Ranknown ledgeng (now iTJungle) with questions
and anwswers to security questionknown ledgel of the OS/400 articles I wrote during
this period which were converted into a book, AS/400
Security
. You can download many of my articles from this web site
that were included in that book. The book is out of
print, but copies are found on eBay
I
have helped helped IBM customers understand how to use the S/38
and OS/400 features and was a speaker at user groups,
COMMON, and training conferences in USA and world wide. I have
spoken on OS/400 security in over 30 different countries.
Some of the security articles were translated into Spanish
as I get an occasional email in Spanish and I have to explainanswersam
not a Spanish speaker..
I have conslted
with software development companies (Hawkeye, PentaSafe (now NetIQ)
, Code 400). I am pleased that the products
offered by these companies contain some of my
recommendations.

I served
on the Board of Directors of our homeowner
association. The BOD is like the city
council for our community. In the past three
years I have learned about golf course irrigation ,
street maintance, swimming pool repair, solar
energy, heat pumps, building roofs and
windows. The BOD
is reponsible for resolving and disputes or
the daily concerns of the over 3300
residents . The job
is educational and challenging. I feel
as that I am helping our
community

The Tucon
Computer Society has
monthly meetings that help PC users. The group has
very knowledgeable members that are willing to help the
novice. The web page of the Tucson Computer Society
is a wealth of information and help for the PC
User. I am amazed by the skill and knowledge of the
members.

 The Folding at
home,
research project at Stanford
University uses my excess computer cycles for gene
research. This is a distribututed
computing application that submits
a simulation task to a PC over the
internet. While the PC is not performing work for
the owner, the excess cycles are used to solve the problem This
a low priority task that runs
only while the computer would be
idle.. If you would

I have a face book account there are
more pictures posted about YMCA Camp Olson and my
family.
Face book is a social outlet
and has no security information. I enjoy
playing farmville. If you are a farmville
advocate then I and am always looking for
neighbors.

I have a Classmates account to communicate
with high school, college and IBM friends. The
Monte Vista class of 1959 had our 50th reunion and it
was a great success. The
years have been good to our class we had a great time at
the reunion in 2009.
